Coil Sculpture Assignment 9-12, Skowhegan Area High School

This is a coil sculpture assignment. Discussion with students was about various
methods of coiling and slab making.

Process

  • I have students creating a variety of things, log cabin, Buddha, and various other forms.
  • Discussion on sculptors and how they have used clay to create a three dimensional sculpture.
  • Studying American Indian art a video of Iroquois clay artists enhance the lesson
  • Students will learn how artists such as Peter Jones have interpreted their culture through ceramic art.

Goals and objectives

  • To make a sculpture that is fireable (no clay thicker than around 2 inches) and reflects their personalities and the world around them.
  • The process of making it out of clay teaches them how to work with a series of steps.
  • The sculptures are allowed to dry, bisque fired and then glazed, so they have to work through a number of steps to create a finished
    product.
