Mosaic Ceramic Tile Art
Mosaic art is creating artwork with small pieces of colored stones or glass and other found materials. This technique is one of the widely used forms from the ancient times. In the 4 B.C., the Greeks mosaics were used on roads where raised colored pebbles were arranged in patterns and variety of color. This includes mosaics in church ceilings with religious themes. In the 5th century BC, The use of mosaic art can be seen in Islamic art as well. Islamic mosaic art was all about the use of geometric shapes. Mosaics were used to decorate buildings of religious significance.
During the middle ages, 13th BC or @ 1225, facades (false fronts of a building) were decorated with mosaic technique, also with religious themes. Many of the churches were the only places that can afford stained glass, mosaics and elaborate artwork.
In modern times, mosaic art continues in countertops, bathroom walls, and patio floors. This lesson will give students an idea of the process involved.
