Marble Art
Dance, music and performance were the theme of the Marble Art process. Paper is treated with a chemical called “alum”. The alum is applied with a sponge. This makes the paint accept the colors better. Water-soluble paint was used with a solution of water mixed with “carrageenan”, a gelatinous extract from red sea weed also found in many cosmetic products. This solution thickens the water, which helps the paint remain suspended or float on top. Exploratory 8th grade art students use special rakes and end of a paintbrush to move various colors into swirls and patterns.
