Pottery
This pottery lesson will deal with 2 functions in art: “form” making a 3d object and “function” –making the 3-d object for a purpose. Pottery all over the world made it to serve a purpose: Carrying liquids, grain, food, and storage. Students chose from the following:
• Cup
• Mug with a handle
• Vase
• Container with lid
Japanese and Chinese calligraphy will be explored and translated through “Google Translator”. The calligraphy (art of beautiful writing) style (being free and loose) will be used to create characters and the natural environment on to their pottery. Study Wiz, a MLTI laptop program was used as resource. This program is used in every class project.
VOCABULARY (this will be on your test) in clay pottery work:
1. A scoring-joining 2 piece of clay together while clay is moist. Make cross-hatching marks of ”x’s” with a needle/stylus on both side of the clay to be joined.
2. Slip- joining 2 pieces of clay together when clay is mostly dries by cross-hatching. A solution of thick watery clay with a few drops of white vinegar is used also. Make ”x’s” with a sharp needle on both side of the clay that is to be joined.
3. Bisque fire-is the first firing in a kiln when the clay is air-dried.
4. 2nd firing-is when the clay is painted, bisque fired and ready to be fired again in the kiln.
5. Glaze-is special paint that adds the color to the pottery and is very shiny when fired.
6. Under glaze –paint that will have dull finish when fired. This is used for more fine and detail work so in will not run when fired.
7. Clear glazes – is a pink paint or white that dries clear and very shiny, when fired. This is to make the pottery and under glaze shinier.
8. Slab method –is a hand building method by using a ball of clay and pressed with a rolling pin to make a flat, even piece of clay (about ¼ to ½ thick.)
9. Coil Pot-is a method in building a sculpture or pottery by using a ball of clay and rolling by hand to make a long snake. Using the snake to coil the object.
10. Pinch Pot – is a method in building a sculpture or pottery by using a ball of clay and pinching the middle of the clay. Keeping expanding the inside widening. This will hollow the inside of the clay. |
