Maine Fish Bas Relief Sculptures
Skowhegan Area Middle School
Frank Chin Art Teacher

A bas-relief is a type of sculpture that is flat on one side and 3-D (3 dimensional, having height, width and depth). The various types of fish found in Maine inspired the theme. Students resourced their ideas from the Department of Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. http://www.maine.gov/ifw/fishing/species/identification/index.htm

Each artist chose a fish found in the fresh or ocean waters of Maine. They sketched out the fish with an accurate account of the shape and color. A slab of clay was given to each student and with a stylus and various other clay tools; students began their 3D creations. Textures and pattern was stressed and experimented.

Although the fish have distinct markings and color, the art class chose to use imaginative colors, pattern and textures instead. As you can see here, the fish seem to come alive with brilliant colors and textures.
