“Three Musicians” by Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973)

The following student’s artwork was the inspiration of “Three musicians and dog”. It was painted in a period of carefree living, rejecting conventional life style called bohemian life. Picasso dressed as a Harlequin (clown) joined by two figures who may represent poet–friends of the artist's. The style is “cubist” meaning shapes and patterns are in a square or rectangular form, representing many views of the object. This is an oil painting but Picasso wanted to show that it could be part collage. Collage is a method of using cut or torn pasted paper to make a picture is a “collage”. He painted straight cut lines giving the impression of both a collage and oil painting.
